Rear Admiral Robert E. Peary Family Collection, 1798 - 1976. Photographs from Robert E. Peary's Arctic Sled Expedition, ca. 1902 - ca. 1902

1902

This series consists of photographic prints, which according to annotations by Robert E. Peary, were intended for use in articles about Arctic travel and animals. The images were taken during Peary's unsuccessful 1902 attempt to reach the North Pole. Included among the photographs in this series is an image of a group of explorers at the camp raised at that latitude (XP-XPAE-5). Also included are photographs of Fort Conger which served as Peary's winter quarters during his 1898 expedition (XP-XPAE-18, XP-XPAE-20 and XP-XPAE-21). Three portraits of Eskimos can be found in this series (XP-XPAE-24, XP-XPAE-27, and XP-XPAE-28). Most of the facial features of the explorers pictured cannot be discerned. The caption for image XP-XPAE-6, however, identifies Matthew Henson as among those pictured. Additionally, photographs of dog teams (XP-XPAE-4) and the capture of a two-horned narwhal whale (XP-XPAE-3) are included. Several images show sledding parties trekking along snowy and icy terrain (XP-XPAE-10, XP-XPAE-12, XP-XPAE-14 and XP-XPAE-15). Views of Arctic landscape are also included (XP-XPAE-17, XP-XPAE-23, and XP-XPAE-26).
